Writers never really die; their stories live on, to be found again, to be told again, to scare again.

In Victorian London, a select group of writers, led by Arthur Conan Doyle, Bram Stoker and Henry James held an informal dining club, the price of entry to which was the telling of a story by each invited guest.

These are their stories, containing tales of revenant loved ones, lost cities, weird science, spectral appearances and mysteries in the fog of the old city, all told by some of the foremost writers of the day. In here you'll find Verne and Wells, Tolstoy and Checkov, Stevenson and Oliphant, Kipling, Twain, Haggard and Blavatsky alongside their hosts.

Come, join us for dinner and a story:

  • Robert Louis Stevenson - Wee Davie Makes a Friend
  • Rudyard Kipling - The High Bungalow
  • Leo Tolstoy - The Immortal Memory
  • Bram Stoker - The House of the Dead
  • Mark Twain - Once a Jackass
  • Herbert George Wells - Farside
  • Margaret Oliphant - To the Manor Born
  • Oscar Wilde - The Angry Ghost
  • Henry Rider Haggard - The Black Ziggurat
  • Helena P Blavatsky - Born of Ether
  • Henry James - The Scrimshaw Set
  • Anton Checkov - At the Molenzki Junction
  • Jules Verne - To the Moon and Beyond
  • Arthur Conan Doyle - The Curious Affair on the Embankment

Interview with the author:

So what makes this short story collection so special?

Meikle: I love the idea that all these famous writers knew each other, and met for a meal, a drink, a smoke and some storytelling in an old London club / bar setting. It chimes almost exactly with my own idea of a good time. It's special to me in that it's a culmination of the past half dozen or so years of writing. Before this collection there were the Carnacki stories, the Holmes stories, the Challenger stories, and the collaborations with M Wayne Miller in numerous deluxe hardcovers. THE GHOST CLUB feels like an endpiece to all of that, a last celebration of everything I love about the era and the storytellers. Plus it's the most ambitious piece of work I've undertaken in my writing so far, the cause of much worrying and fretting on my part, so seeing the lovely blurbs and comments from writers I have long admired makes it extra special to me.

Why should horror fans give Victorian Terror a try?

Meikle: It's where we come from. The Victorian era storytelling tradition was the launching point for horror, and also for crime fiction, for science fiction, for fantasy and for much of how we see the world today. It gave us Sherlock Holmes, Dr Jeckyll, Dracula, the Invisible Man, Captain Nemo, and all manner of ghosts, spooks and spectres that still fill our entertainment of choice today. It's my way of paying homage to that tradition. This is who I am.

How did you choose which authors to use in this book?

Meikle: Initially all I knew was that Doyle and Stoker were founder members of the club in London. Then I found out that Henry James was in London at the same time as them and it started to come together. The cut off point is the early 1890s, which I picked to get the maximum number of writers available, and alive, and able to visit London, at the same time. Originally I wanted to get Dickens in there too, but he was too dead, although I did consider having his ghost tell a story at the Ghost Club but discarded it. I also had to do some sleight of hand to cram H G Wells in before he actually published anything. But I set myself the task of keeping the background bits as accurate as I could, so that meant picking who got involved was actually ma

No elastic around the thighs is kinda nice!
Size: 9, Color: Cotton Stretch - Colors May Vary
Great undies! They fit good and the fabric is comfortable. Only thing is that the legs tend to ride up/bunch up with pants on. I got them for post surgery comfort and thats what I got.

    Soooo comfortable
Size: 11 Plus, Color: Microfiber - Colors May Vary
Easy on/off because they really do stretch but return to shape. Fit is close to the body but not tight. Love that there is no elastic binding around my legs. Clothes glide over them because they are super smooth. Might never buy another style again.

These were such a RELIEF during a shingles outbreak!
Size: 10 Plus, Color: Microfiber - Colors May Vary
I developed shingles on my abdomen and spent a few days commando because I was in so much pain and couldn’t stand anything against my skin but a nightgown. I had a drs appointment and was agonizing about showing up in a nightgown and bathrobe at the office. Then I I remembered my grandma used to wear boy leg high waisted undies so looked for something similar. These underpants by Fruit of the Loom were inexpensive and seemed to be similar to what I thought might work, so I ordered a four pack. They were very reasonably priced and when they arrived were of very good quality and well made. They were snugger fitting than I had hoped but were very very soft for tender areas on my abdomen. As it was, the snugness was comforting as they stay in place and act as a barrier between the sore rash areas and light clothing. I’ve never experienced the discomfort of nerve pain from wearing clothes andI’m so glad I happened on to these. I’m on the mend now but still wearing these as I’ve developed some neuralgia and these continue to keep me comfortable.

    annoyed
Size: 8, Color: Cotton Stretch - Colors May Vary
i purchased the boxer brief. they fit perfectly. they are fairly soft and seemingly comfortable. not too thin or too thick, good for breathability. my biggest issues are the stitching being poorly done, making me worry the longevity will be lacking and the label stating “do not use fabric softener”. the reason i am annoyed though, is the images show pink and gray colors only, which is what i was hoping for, or at least colors only. i understand all multipacks are marked “colors may vary”, but for the love of god, stop putting white pairs in these packs. white, nudes/neutrals, and black should be sold separately in their own packs. i do not want ugly old timey white underwear. i wanted colors, any colors EXCEPT white! i would however, have LOVED an all black only pack!
